Courtyard Playground Transformation at Severndale Specialist Academy, Shrewsbury

The Brief

Severndale Specialist Academy asked Ray Parry Playgrounds to redesign and install an inclusive play solution in their “Crescent” courtyard. The school wanted to transform this under‐used space into a vibrant, safe and stimulating outdoor environment that supports the pupils’ physical, sensory and social development.

The challenge: the entire installation had to be planned, approved and completed over a tight one‐week turnaround during the Autumn half‐term break so the space was ready when pupils returned.

What We Delivered

  • A free site visit and consultation to understand the unique needs of the pupils, the space constraints of the courtyard and the tight timeframe.
  • Design and installation of a steel low-level adventure trail to promote balance, coordination and inclusive movement.
  • Installation of coloured wet-pour surfacing, enhancing safety and adding sensory appeal through colour and texture.
  • Creation of a roadway track within the courtyard, enabling imaginative play, bike/ride-on fun and supporting motor skills.
  • Project management and installation executed within one week, over the half‐term, with the area handed over on time and ready for pupil use.

The Outcome

The transformed courtyard now offers:

  • A safe, flexible outdoor play space tailored to special educational needs (SEN) pupils
  • Improved mobility and sensory interaction through surface design and play infrastructure
  • A vibrant, inclusive area that supports social interaction and movement for pupils of varying abilities
  • A solution completed on time—meeting the school’s tight schedule and minimising disruption
