Inclusive Playground Improvements at Wem Recreation Ground

Creating a more inclusive playground doesn’t always require a full redevelopment. Sometimes, targeted improvements can make a meaningful difference to how a space is used and who can access it.

At Wem Recreation Ground in Shropshire, Ray Parry Playgrounds worked with Wem Town Council to enhance the existing play area by introducing inclusive playground equipment, including a basket swing and new inclusive play panels.

These additions have helped transform the space into a more welcoming environment for children of all abilities, supporting accessible play and encouraging more families to use the area.

Supporting Inclusive Play for the Whole Community

By replacing a standard swing with a basket swing and installing ground-level play panels, the updated playground now provides:

  • More accessible play opportunities for children with different needs
  • Equipment that supports shared play and social interaction
  • A more inclusive environment within an existing public play space

This project demonstrates how small playground improvements can significantly enhance inclusivity without the need for large-scale investment.

“Wem Town Council is delighted with the work carried out by Ray Parry Playgrounds to replace a standard swing with a basket swing and install new inclusive play panels on Wem Recreation Ground. These improvements have enabled us to provide more opportunities for children of all abilities in our town to enjoy the play area together. The project shows that making a play space more inclusive does not have to be expensive, even a small refresh can help open up the area so it can be enjoyed by everyone.” Penny P’Hagan, Town Clerk, Wem Town Council, Shropshire

Inclusive Playground Equipment That Works

This project highlights a key principle of inclusive playground design: accessibility can often be improved through thoughtful upgrades rather than complete redesigns.

Features such as:

  • Basket swings
  • Inclusive play panels
  • Ground-level sensory equipment

can help ensure public play areas are accessible, engaging and used by a wider range of children.
